Project Pearl is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our mission began in 2011 by assisting Forsyth County Animal Control with outreach and adoptions. Through our innovative “Lend a Lens” photography program, Project Pearl successfully increased shelter adoptions by nearly 30% with the help of local, professional photographers. In early 2012, we created a medical-only foster program that provided medical care for shelter animals that were not eligible at the time of intake for the adoptions. Project Pearl believes that community-wide education results in better population control, lower stray intakes and reduces owner surrenders.
The idea of Project Pearl was created September 27, 2011 after founder Melissa Ball met a wonderful shelter dog, Pearl. Found as stray, Pearl’s owner was located, but had moved and decided not to bring her along. A staff favorite, Pearl patiently waited in adoptions for over two months. An email with the subject line, “looking for a dog to adopt” matched Pearl to her new family within 24-hours. Two days later the organization was created. With the help of local professional photographers and foster volunteers, Project Pearl has been instrumental in defining a community need. We are grateful to have the community support, which includes being recognized for over a dozen awards and recognitions.
In order to fully concentrate on the growing demand of helping medical cases, in August 2017 Project Pearl took ownership of our all our medical foster animals and began doing adoptions. We rely heavily on foster homes to provide a safe, loving and secure environment for our foster animals. Once medical cases are healthy, we screen applications and adopt them out to responsible, loving homes. Due to the severity of some medical cases, the length of time in foster care can range from a few weeks to over a year and some medical fosters may require lifelong medication. Dogs that are treated for heartworm disease must remain on preventative for life. For more information about our medical foster program or to inquire about fostering or adopting, please email us at: email@example.com.
Since 2012 Project Pearl has invested over $300,000 into our medical foster program. The following animals have received a second chance by entering our medical foster program.
