- What is Project Pearl?
  
  Project Pearl is a non-profit organization based in Winston-Salem, NC that works solely in partnership with Forsyth County Animal Control. Our mission is to help and support FCAC with outreach, adoptions and provide medical care for animals that are not eligible at the time of intake for the adoption program. Since October 2011 we have helped increase adoptions by nearly 30%. Project Pearl believes that community-wide education results in better population control, lower stray intakes and reduces owner surrenders.
  
  How Project Pearl Started
  
  The idea of Project Pearl was formed October 2011 after Melissa Ball & Fowler Ruffin met a wonderful Forsyth County shelter dog, Pearl. Found as a stray, Pearl’s owner was located, but had moved and decided not to bring her along. A staff favorite, Pearl, an adult dog, was already housetrained and had wonderful manners, but also had some minor skin allergies and was missing patches of hair, which made her less desirable. She patiently waited 2 months for a home. An email with the subject line, “looking for a dog to adopt” brought Melissa & Fowler together and their first project was a success, Pearl was in her new home! Two days later Project Pearl was born!
  
  Trying to figure out a new way to help their local shelter, Project Pearl decided to highlight the animals at FCAC with their “Lend a Lens” program. With the help of local professional photographers and volunteers, Project Pearl meets two times a week at the shelter and photographs animals awaiting adoption. Photos are then utilized in a variety of social media outlets, magazines and on the web.
